One of the most important element of Egyptian culture: the cinema!
The history of Egyptian cinema is a true story that combines laughter and tears, a drama that intertwines songs and dance. Egyptian cinema has long dominated Arab cinemas and screens by its quantity and especially quality and continues to appear in front of the stage as a leading provider of Arabic-speaking world.
The first feature film entirely national “Leila”, dating from 1928. This finding forced all critics and historians to reconsider their writings about the birth of this film. During the 30 and 40 years developed a style typical of Egypt: the musical, which enjoyed immense popular success in the Arab world. Egyptians naturally good at singing and dancing, the music was thus omnipresent in the achievements of the Egyptian era.
Large icons of the Arabic song have proved their worth: Oum Kalthoum, the grande dame of Egyptian Arabic song, is at the top of the list. With hits like Sirat-Al-Hob (The History of Love), Enta Omri (You, my life), Alf Lila wa Lila (Thousand and One Nights), Al Atlal etc.
Another icon of the Arabic song is Abdelhalim Hafedh, known as “the brown nightingale”. Long compared to Frank Sinatra, he was unquestionably the most popular singer-actor of all time.
Other big names: Mohamed Abdel Wahab - the singer of all generations- and Farid Latrech.
Soon, the Egyptian companies monopolize the market for Arab cinema. A generation of great filmmakers appears with Salah Abu Saif (The Costaud, 1957 The beginning of the end, 1960; The second wife, 1967), Henry Barakat (Diabless Madam, 1949), Tawfiq Saleh (The rebels, 1968), Mohamed Khan (The wife of an important man, 1987) etc...
The largest Egyptian filmmaker is undoubtedly the famous Youssef Chahine, he has imposed a different tone with his vision of reality exploded. The accomplishments of Destin, 1997 or the Sixth Day, 1986 marked the Egyptian and Arab cinema in general by infusing a breath of fresh air.
